How Many Euro Pallets Fit in a 53ft Trailer?

A 53ft trailer takes 40 Euro pallets on the floor in a single layer when they are loaded turned, short side down the length, or 39 loaded longways. Counts come from the 16002 x 2591 mm usable interior with no overhang and no stacking.

By pallet type

The short answer

40 Euro pallets loaded turned (20 down by 2 across, short side down the length), or 39 loaded longways (13 by 3). Single tier, no overhang.

A 53ft trailer is 2591 mm wide inside, 239 mm more than an ISO container, and that extra width is enough for a third Euro pallet abreast longways or two abreast turned. Turned wins here by one pallet: 20 rows of 2 rather than 13 rows of 3.

Internal dimensions used

  • 53 ft Dry Van Trailer: 16002 x 2591 x 2794 mm usable interior (630 x 102 x 110 in), 20,000 kg payload.
  • Euro pallet (EUR / EPAL 1, 1200 x 800 mm): 1200 x 800 mm footprint (47.2 x 31.5 in), 144 mm deck, 1,500 kg dynamic rating.

Usable figures sit a little under nominal to allow for corrugation, posts and the door frame; the count is a plain grid with no overhang.

Long side or short side down the trailer

Longways (1200 mm side down the length): 13 down x 3 across = 39 pallets, 402 mm spare at the doors and 191 mm across. Floor used 90.3%.

Turned (800 mm side down the length): 20 down x 2 across = 40 pallets, 2 mm spare at the doors and 191 mm across. Floor used 92.6%.

Mixing lanes does not help here: one lane of each orientation totals 33 pallets and uses only 2000 mm of the width, so 40 loaded turned is the best floor.

What changes with double stacking

Two tiers need every loaded pallet, deck included, at or under 1397 mm in the 2794 mm interior: goods no higher than 1253 mm on a 144 mm deck. The 1500 mm load preset here (1644 mm with the deck) is one tier only. Under 1253 mm the floor count doubles to 80, if the bottom tier can carry the top.

Weight usually bites first. At the full 1,500 kg pallet rating the 20,000 kg payload caps the load at 13 pallets, before the floor is even full. Real loads run lighter, but add the total up before planning a second tier.

Frequently asked questions

Should Euro pallets go in a 53ft trailer longways or turned?
Turned. With the 800 mm side down the length you get 20 rows of 2, 40 pallets. Longways gives 13 rows of 3, 39. Load the way your forklift and the freight allow; the difference is 1 pallet.
How many Euro pallets fit in a 53ft trailer double stacked?
Up to 80, if each loaded pallet is 1397 mm or under with its 144 mm deck (goods to 1253 mm) and the bottom tier can carry the top. The 1500 mm load preset on this page fits one tier.
What 53ft trailer dimensions does this use?
A usable interior of 16002 x 2591 x 2794 mm (630 x 102 x 110 in) and a 20,000 kg payload, the same figures as the calculator.
